Thinking About a River Cruise?

A river cruise is a voyage on a smaller ship that travels along a river rather than the open sea. In Europe, that usually means the Rhine, Danube, Rhône, Seine or Douro. You unpack once, and the ship carries you from town to town — often docking within walking distance of the old center.

For many people, yes. You see several countries or regions without repacking, meals and many excursions are arranged for you, and there's a local guide in most ports. If you'd rather spend a week deep in one city, a land trip might suit you better — that's worth talking through.

All three are well-regarded, but they feel different. They vary in ship design, cabin styles, dining, how active the excursions are, what's included and the overall atmosphere on board. The right one depends on how you like to travel, not on which is "best." I'm certified with all three and happy to compare them for your specific trip.

The Danube and the Rhine are the most popular first choices. The Danube links grand capitals like Vienna and Budapest; the Rhine is known for castles, vineyards and storybook towns. The Rhône and Seine lean toward French food and countryside, and the Douro is quieter wine country in Portugal. What you want to see matters most.

It depends on the cruise line and fare. Most include your cabin, meals on board and some guided excursions. Beverages, Wi-Fi, gratuities, specialty excursions and airport transfers may or may not be included. Comparing inclusions carefully is one of the easiest ways to understand the real value of a cruise.

Often more than people expect. Many towns have cobblestones, hills, stairs and pedestrian-only old centers. Most lines offer different activity levels on excursions, and you can always choose to stay on board — but it's worth knowing the walking involved before you book.

I usually recommend it. Arriving a day or more early gives you a cushion for flight delays and time to rest before boarding. Many travelers also enjoy a pre- or post-cruise stay in cities like Budapest, Prague, Amsterdam or Paris.
