The Itinerary Changed. My Excitement Didn’t.
Why a change of plans doesn’t have to mean a change of heart.

ReflectionsThere’s something wonderful about planning a trip.
We research destinations, look at pictures, imagine the places we’ll visit, and start dreaming about the experiences waiting for us. Sometimes we’ve been looking forward to those moments for years.
And then, sometimes, the plans change.
Maybe it’s the weather. Maybe it’s a missed port, a delayed flight, or river conditions that make the original itinerary impossible.
And yes, that can be disappointing.
But I’ve learned something through my years of traveling.
Just because the itinerary changes doesn’t mean the adventure has to.
An Unexpected Afternoon in Alaska

A couple of years ago, I was on a Princess Cruises familiarization trip in Alaska with about 25 or 30 other travel advisors.
We were traveling by bus to visit a beautiful lodge, somewhere I was really looking forward to seeing.
But Alaska had other plans for us that day.
The weather had turned bad, and the lodge was experiencing problems with its electricity and utilities. Bringing another busload of people into that situation wasn’t exactly ideal.
So we waited in Talkeetna, Alaska, a little town along the way.
And you know what?
We had a wonderful afternoon!
We found a little place to gather. Princess made arrangements for our lunch, even though the weather certainly wasn’t their fault. We sat around visiting, laughing, getting to know the other advisors better, and spending more time with Kelly, our Princess representative.
As far as I could tell, nobody was upset. We were simply enjoying the afternoon together.
Would I have loved to see that lodge?
Absolutely!
But looking back, I remember that afternoon with such fondness. The conversations, the laughter, the unexpected time together.
We missed something we had planned, but we experienced something we hadn’t.
And sometimes, that’s just how travel works.
Now, Another Adventure Is Waiting

In November, I’ll be heading to Budapest for a couple of days before boarding AmaWaterways’ beautiful new AmaSofia for a journey along the Danube.
I’ve been looking forward to this trip for months!
But European river conditions have been a concern, and adjustments to our planned itinerary have been announced.
Could things change again before we sail? Absolutely. River conditions are constantly evolving, and the final experience may look different from what we’re expecting today.
But here’s the thing.
My excitement hasn’t changed.
I’m still going to Budapest. I’m still going to experience a beautiful new river ship. I’m still going to explore places, meet people, learn new things, and make memories.
There may be places I don’t get to visit this time. There may be different excursions or experiences than originally planned.
But there are still so many wonderful things waiting for me.
And I’m looking forward to every one of them.
There’s More Behind an Itinerary Change Than We Sometimes Realize
One of the things I appreciate about being a travel advisor is the opportunity to continually learn.
I regularly attend AmaWaterways’ Wednesday webinars, and river conditions have been an important topic of discussion.
I’ve listened to the updates, learned about the challenges, and followed how changing water levels can affect river cruising.
So when adjustments were announced for my upcoming trip, I understood that this was a possibility.
That doesn’t mean every traveler would have the same reaction. And it certainly doesn’t mean anyone’s disappointment is unreasonable.
For some people, a particular destination may be the very reason they booked their trip. Perhaps they’ve dreamed of visiting it for decades.
I understand that.
But I also think it helps to understand why these changes happen.
Cruise itineraries, whether on rivers or oceans, involve extensive planning and coordination. Port arrangements, weather conditions, navigation requirements, local authorities, and safety considerations all play a role.
When changes become necessary, they’re generally not made casually.
Sometimes conditions simply won’t allow a ship to safely follow its original route.
And while that may not take away the disappointment, understanding what’s happening can make the unexpected feel a little less unsettling.
It’s also why I believe communication matters so much.
Travelers deserve to understand what’s changing, what alternatives are available, and what those changes mean for their vacation.
Sometimes the changes are significant enough that reconsidering a trip makes sense. Every traveler’s priorities are different.
But sometimes a different itinerary can still offer a wonderful experience.
Making Room for the Unexpected
I’ve always believed that part of the joy of traveling is discovering things we didn’t even know we were looking for.
A little café tucked away on a side street.
A conversation with someone we might never have met.
A beautiful view that wasn’t in the brochure.
Or an unexpected afternoon in an Alaskan town, sharing a long lunch and laughter with new friends.
We can’t plan every one of those moments.
And maybe that’s part of what makes them special.
I don’t believe we should stop getting excited about our itineraries or pretend it doesn’t matter when plans change.
Of course it matters.
But I also don’t want to become so focused on what I’m missing that I overlook what’s still right in front of me.
We can be disappointed about something we won’t experience and still be excited about everything we will.
Those two feelings can exist together.
Sometimes, You’ve Just Got to Roll With It
And now I can’t help but think of that old Steve Winwood song, “Roll With It.”
It makes me smile, because sometimes that’s exactly what travel calls for.
A little flexibility. A little patience. A sense of humor. And the willingness to see where the day takes us.
Not because every change is wonderful.
Not because disappointment isn’t real.
But because the world is still full of beautiful places, interesting people, and experiences worth having.
As I prepare for my Danube adventure, I don’t know exactly how every day will unfold.
And that’s okay.
I’m going with an open mind, a grateful heart, and all the excitement I’ve had since the day I learned I’d be going.
Because I may not experience every place I originally expected, but I certainly don’t want to overlook the wonderful experiences still waiting for me.
Sometimes the memories we bring home aren’t the ones we planned to make.
And sometimes, those become some of our favorite stories.
