What Is a Distinctive Voyages Cruise, and Why Haven't More Travelers Heard About It?

Have you ever booked a cruise, enjoyed every minute of it, and then discovered there were special experiences available that you didn't even know existed?

Well, let me tell you about something I think more travelers should know about.

It's called Distinctive Voyages, and even some experienced cruisers have never heard of it.

And that's a shame, because you might be looking at a cruise right now that offers some wonderful additional benefits, and nobody has mentioned them to you.

So, What Exactly Is Distinctive Voyages?

Distinctive Voyages is an exclusive hosted cruise program offered through Travel Leaders Network, of which my agency, Magical Moments Vacations, is a member.

The program is available on select sailings with participating cruise lines. It adds special experiences and personalized touches to your vacation.

Now, this isn't a different kind of cruise ship, and you aren't sailing separately from the other passengers.

You're enjoying the same beautiful ship, the same itinerary, and everything your cruise line already offers.

The difference is that guests enrolled in the Distinctive Voyages program receive additional benefits.

And I think that's pretty special.

What Do You Get With a Distinctive Voyages Cruise?

There are three things I especially want you to know about.

1. An Exclusive Shore Excursion

One of the biggest benefits of Distinctive Voyages is the exclusive shore excursion offered on most participating sailings.

And these aren't simply the regular cruise line excursions that anyone can book. They're specially arranged experiences for eligible Distinctive Voyages guests.

Depending on the destination, you might enjoy a cultural experience, visit a historic site, or discover something special about the place you're visiting.

It's an opportunity to experience a destination in a way you might not have planned on your own.

A small number of participating sailings offer a different exclusive amenity instead, so I always check exactly what's included.

And here's something worth knowing: these special experiences are included as a Distinctive Voyages benefit for eligible guests.

2. A Private Welcome Reception

Early in the cruise, Distinctive Voyages guests are invited to a private onboard welcome reception.

It's an opportunity to meet your host, learn more about the special experiences planned for your sailing, and visit with some of your fellow travelers.

You might discover that someone else is celebrating an anniversary, visiting a destination they've dreamed about for years, or taking their very first cruise.

And sometimes those conversations turn into friendships that last long after the vacation ends.

You know how much I enjoy sitting down and visiting with people. So you can probably understand why this part of the program appeals to me!

3. An Experienced Onboard Host

A Distinctive Voyages Host is an experienced travel professional who sails with the guests and serves as an additional resource throughout the voyage.

Maybe you have a question about a port of call. Maybe you need help understanding the details of the special excursion. Or perhaps you just appreciate having a familiar face onboard.

That's what the host is there for.

And no, you don't have to spend your entire vacation with the host!

You can be as independent as you like.

I think of it as having someone available when you need a little guidance, without feeling like you're on a school field trip.

You Could Be on a Distinctive Voyages Sailing and Not Even Know It

Here's something that surprises a lot of travelers.

Let's say you're looking at a Mediterranean cruise aboard Celebrity Infinity. You love the itinerary, the dates work, and you're ready to book.

What you may not realize is that your particular departure is also a Distinctive Voyages sailing.

Unless someone tells you about the program, you might never know that additional experiences are available.

That's where working with a travel advisor who participates in Travel Leaders Network can make a difference.

I can identify eligible sailings, explain the benefits, and help arrange a qualifying reservation through the program.

And what if those extras don't interest you?

That's perfectly fine!

You can still enjoy the cruise without participating in Distinctive Voyages. It's your vacation, and you should enjoy it your way.

But wouldn't you at least want to know the opportunity was there?

That's why I think more travelers should hear about this program. Not because it's right for everybody, but because you deserve to know what your options are.

One Important Thing to Know Before You Sail

Just because your cruise happens to be a Distinctive Voyages sailing doesn't automatically mean you're part of the program.

You must be enrolled in Distinctive Voyages before your cruise.

It's not something you can discover once you're onboard and simply ask to join.

That's why it's important to know about the program while you're planning your vacation, not after you've already sailed.

When I'm helping someone choose a cruise, I can check whether a Distinctive Voyages program is available on their preferred sailing, explain what's included, and make sure the necessary arrangements are handled ahead of time.

And if you'd rather enjoy the cruise without participating? That's perfectly fine, too.

The important thing is knowing your options before you go.

Is Distinctive Voyages Only for Luxury Travelers?

Not at all.

While many participating cruise lines are considered premium or luxury, you don't have to be someone who normally books the most expensive suite on the ship to appreciate the program.

Maybe you love a beautiful ocean-view stateroom. Maybe you enjoy a balcony and a cup of coffee in the morning. Or maybe you simply want to make the most of the destinations you're visiting.

What matters is finding a cruise that fits your interests, travel style, and budget.

I never believe in recommending something just because it's labeled luxury.

I believe in recommending what is right for you.

Do You Have to Participate in Everything?

Absolutely not.

And I think this is worth mentioning because some travelers hear the word hosted and immediately imagine a tightly scheduled group vacation.

That's not what this has to be.

You still have the freedom to enjoy your cruise the way you want.

Attend the welcome reception. Enjoy the special shore excursion if it interests you. Visit with your host when you'd like.

Then go have your own adventures!

Maybe you want a quiet afternoon with a book. Maybe you have a favorite restaurant onboard. Maybe you and your traveling companion want to explore a port independently.

That's perfectly fine.

The program is meant to add to your vacation, not take it over.

How Do You Know if Your Cruise Qualifies?

Here's something important: Not every sailing on a participating cruise line is a Distinctive Voyages departure.

The cruise line, ship, sailing date, and booking arrangements all matter.

And because Distinctive Voyages is a Travel Leaders Network program, the benefits aren't something you can simply request from the cruise line once you're onboard.

They must be arranged through the appropriate program before sailing.

That's why it's worth asking about Distinctive Voyages before you make your reservation.
