The Hidden City Beneath Budapest

Most visitors to Budapest see Castle Hill from the river, take the funicular up, snap the Fisherman's Bastion, and leave. They have no idea they were standing on top of another city the whole time.

Beneath Castle Hill runs a labyrinth of caves and cellars — miles of them — carved by hot springs and expanded by centuries of human hands. They've been wine cellars, bomb shelters, a medieval prison, and, during the Cold War, a secret military hospital and nuclear bunker that didn't appear on any map.

The Hospital in the Rock is the one I send clients to without fail. It operated as an emergency hospital during WWII and the 1956 revolution, then spent decades as a classified installation before becoming a museum. Walking its wards, frozen in time, is one of the most quietly powerful hours you can spend in Europe.
